Why online training works for me.
First let me throw in a disclaimer. I don’t know what works for other people all I know is what works for me. I’m also not a writer, so I’ll keep it simple.
Using an online personal trainer doesn’t mean you have to workout at home alone, but that is what I prefer.
- Reasons I prefer to workout alone:
- I am extremely shy, however most people that know me would never suspect it. I hide it well.
- I have mini-anxiety attacks when faced with the decision of what to wear to the gym or bicycling, etc. I know it’s silly, and I really hate the way people trivialize this. If I ask someone what should I wear, they always say, “just wear anything”. I can never get good solid answers.
- I have a thing about not wanting people to see my weaknesses. If I went to the gym, I’d be putting myself on display. Again, I know it sounds silly.. but that’s the way I think.
- Why I needed a Personal On-line Trainer:
- I have a basic understanding of weight lifting, the exercises and forms.
- I need a workout routine that I could be confident wasn’t neglecting specific areas of my body. For example, I hate legs and discovered I had a tendency to skip workouts on my “legs” day.
- My workouts were wimpy-TV-watching workouts. I wasn’t paying attention to my rest time between sets, which often would extend 2 to 5 minutes.
- I wasn’t getting the results I felt I should be getting. I’d been working out semi-regularly four years, but just wasn’t getting there.
- I’m 48 years old. I needed to do something now to change my focus.
- Why a Personal On-line Trainer works for me:
- The first benefit I received was an honest evaluation of my eating habits. Terri (my trainer) gave me some very simple guidelines to follow. I was actually expecting something harsh.. like soy stuff and granola and other nasty type health food. But I got none of that. She focused on getting me to eat three meals a day, including a real breakfast with eggs. These were totally obtainable goals.

- Terri created 4 workout programs and added them to my calendar. I knew exactly what to do and when to do it. The routines varied enough to keep me interested and I was confident I was getting a good workout.
- Terri has always been just an email away. She is a real person and is great at answering email. Anytime I’ve had questions about my workouts, schedule or food, all I’d have to do is email her. She’s been a personal trainer for along time. I believe this experience is what gives her the ability to understand a persons exercise needs and create realistic programs.
- The accountability is also a big factor. When I worked out without Terri, no one knew when I’d skip a workout or a week of workouts. No one noticed if I failed to increase the intensity of my program or add heavier weights. But Terri notices these things. When she asks me why I’m still doing only 2 sets of everything, I don’t really have an answer and I know it’s time to start adding sets.
Let me say again, my reasons are not the only ones that make on-line personal training work. It works well for me. I’ve been training with Terri 10 weeks. I feel good. I feel focused. I feel like I have direction in my workouts.

:) wow, I’m almost blushing! But your dedication is what is making it happen. So, in order to keep your motivation level high, you have to think about training, less like a motivation thing and more … like brushing your teeth, a necessary thing.
You don’t skip brushing your teeth before you leave the house, so if you approach training in this manner, it’s not about ‘motivation’ it’s just something you do. All the time.
