After a lifetime in NYC thinking I was too busy, too weak, too whatever to start making fitness an integral part of my life, I finally pushed myself to make a change. And I have to admit that i went all out- I signed up for private, one-on-one sessions with one of the top fitness experts in the city- Terri Walsh.
For someone who shys away from the NYC gym scene, has no clue how to properly work the right muscles, is insanely busy and needs that kick to keep motivated- and needs that kick regularly- this was the best way for me to go! And, after only the first 2 sessions, I was honeslty able to say that it has been one of the best decisions and investments of my life. You can’t put a price on your health!
For me, some of the best things about training with Terri so far are probably things that most people dont necessarily think of in regards to training…and maybe she doesnt even realize she taught me just yet. Her softspoken nature and ‘realness’ has opened my eyes and shown me that anyone- yes, ANYONE- can get their butt in gear. Fitness doesnt have to be intimidating. There is a place and a style that can make even the most timid comfortable. I can do a pushup. The real kind. I really didn’t think i could do anything physical. But with Terri, you show up and you get started. No time for doubting, no time for worrying and wondering if you can really work it. No time for conversation about ‘is this possible’. You just show up and get working. And suddenly- you are doing something you thought for the last 15 years of your life you could never do. I love that. Terri isn’t militaristic. She doesnt get loud and bossy in a bootcamp kind of way. She just gets you moving. No fuss. Oh, but dont get me wrong- it is NOT easy, and it is NOT fun (as Terri likes to say- she never promised it would be!).
Some of my most favorite lessons so far are this (while mundane, they are quite eye-opening!):
1- Salad dressing never made anyone fat.
2- The right amount of protein with your meals will CHANGE your life- even in just 4 days!!! As soon as i added the proper amount of protein to my meals, i felt more energized and less hungry throughout the day! Genius! And here i thought that eating healthy was to overload on veggies.
Finally- i’ve learned so far that getting your body in shape is going to hurt. There are times when the pain in my muscles is so immense that i can’t even move. Times when you wonder what the heck you are doing, because you felt so much better before you started exercising! But, apparently that pain means it’s working…it’s RESULTS!
And that is what keeps me going…even if the little devil on my shoulder keeps trying to tell me otherwise!
