Keeping Motivated

Today with Terri we talked a little bit about how it is so much more instense of a workout when i train with her, than when i do on my own- which is normal, and the reason that people have trainers in the first place. Terri also said that while it’s not as intense as in the studio, i am doing more at home than i would have been doing before- which is true. So, i guess that the point is that sometimes when i feel frustrated that i am not doing as well when i workout at home on my own- i have to remind myself that i am doing more than i used to, and it’s all better than doing nothing at all! And that reminder pushes me to work harder!

The Best Part…

I was talking with one of my friends last night about working out and her experience at her gym and with training sessions package she bought there. She started telling me about how she would be doing lunges across the length of the entire gym, in the midst of other members and felt silly doing it. I just sat there thinking to myself how i could never do that. I’m too shy and intimidated by the typical gym scene, and there is no way i could prance my lunging self in front of everyone else! I am so grateful that Terri Walsh offers the service that she does- because if it didn’t exist, i can confidently say that i would not be on the pretty darn good track that i am now! The private studio (sans mirrors!) really allows me to excel and thrive in the world of training/working out for the first time ever. There is no intimidation factor, and ’private’ really means private. No one is watching as i lunge anywhere (except Terri of course!) and i can spend the entire session focusing on what really matters, my body and my muscles- and not on if my butt looks bigger when i squat. And yes, there are plenty of people who are super successful as gym members- but there are plenty of others like me who need a studio and service like Terri offers! All that said- i am so happy with my progress to date- i can see the changes in my body and more importantly feel the changes. My stamina is up, and exercising is becoming an increasingly necessary part of my daily life. There’s no stopping me now!

Feeling Good

This week has been a really good one for me training-wise. I think seeing results with Terri earlier in the week has really made me reaffirm my committment to getting in shape and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I think it’s partly because results are of course, motivating. But it’s also in part because it hasnt been to hard, and i can actually do a lot more than i ever thought i was capable of. But whatever it is- it’s a great feeling to be on the right, healthy track. So much more to go, but i am actually looking forward to it….well, to everything but the pushups!

The results are in…

So, today i have completed 5 weeks of training with Terri Walsh….and had my measurements taken! Firstly, i cannot believe how fast the 5 weeks flew by and how much i’ve learned about fitness and my body in that short time. For any non-believers out there, the reality is that it works. Changing your eating habits, and becoming active works. I have lost a total of 14.5 inches in 5 weeks- insane! And the truth is, i havent be doing anything psycho-crazy in those 5 weeks. Aside from my 2 sessions with Terri each week, i work out as home as often, and as best i can (using what Terri has taught me)- sometimes it’s 5 days a week, and sometimes it’s 4 if im really busy. I still eat- and i’m not crazy diet-starving myself either- i just eat more protein, fresh fruits and veggies and no junk…unless there’s a party, or occasion which is part of life- then i might splurge for the moment- but it never turns out destructive like i used to fear- bc i maintain my new lifestyle the rest of the time. So basically- i haven’t gone super over-the-top, but i have made a decent change to my lifestyle, and in just 5 weeks i have seen results that i have never seen before. Training with Terri is not just exercise- it is learing about your body and how it works, and it’s about how being realistic can work, and work well! This has been the best investment i have ever made…and someone today asked me how hard it has been so far to be motivated and stay with it- and when i thought about it- the truth is, it hasnt really been that hard. I think when you do things the right way, all else follows. I am looking forward to where i will be in 5 more weeks!

Going strong…

Still training and learning more and more each day. It’s really amazing, but each week I am able to handle more exercises/reps, heavier weights, etc. I know it sounds completely simplistic- but i never thought i would be able to do even half of what i am doing now. Terri pushes you further and harder each session- which just shows you that you can do it. I also find that i am not as exhausted from the workouts, and i am not as sore the next day either (halelujah)!

As the training goes on, i can also see the difference when i am using the correct form to do the exercises- pulling my naval down and pushing my feet into the ground- and as i learn and get better at each exercise, it isn’t as hard to remember to do those things each time. It’s all just getting to flow together. And, it makes it so much better when i am home doing some of the exercises that Terri has taught me- bc i hear her in my head reminding me about my form- to ensure that im doing it right!

4 sessions in…

Im 4 sessions into my training with Terri Walsh and i can already see a change in my attitude towards living a healthy lifestyle. The sessions are hard work, but i’m learning so much about my body, my strength and the exercises. I can feel a huge difference when i do a repetition the correct way (using the correct muscles) than when i do the same thing the way i thought was correct! And, so many of the exercises that Terri has me do during our sessions can be replicated in some way at home on my own. But hey, it is definitely so much more motivating when i work with Terri one on one, than by myself! But, to get results, it is important to work at home too.

Adding the right amounts of protein to my diet has also made a huge impact on me. I really used to think that eating healthy was lots of veggies. But the protein is so important. I rarely feel hungry during the day now, and i feel so much more energized.

Since beginning my training with Terri, my energy is up, i get better nights sleep and my skin is looking clearer than ever! And all it took was movement….like Terri says, movement can cure almost anything!

Finally getting off my butt!

After a lifetime in NYC thinking I was too busy, too weak, too whatever to start making fitness an integral part of my life, I finally pushed myself to make a change. And I have to admit that i went all out- I signed up for private, one-on-one sessions with one of the top fitness experts in the city- Terri Walsh.

For someone who shys away from the NYC gym scene, has no clue how to properly work the right muscles, is insanely busy and needs that kick to keep motivated- and needs that kick regularly- this was the best way for me to go! And, after only the first 2 sessions, I was honeslty able to say that it has been one of the best decisions and investments of my life. You can’t put a price on your health!

For me, some of the best things about training with Terri so far are probably things that most people dont necessarily think of in regards to training…and maybe she doesnt even realize she taught me just yet. Her softspoken nature and ‘realness’ has opened my eyes and shown me that anyone- yes, ANYONE- can get their butt in gear. Fitness doesnt have to be intimidating. There is a place and a style that can make even the most timid comfortable. I can do a pushup. The real kind. I really didn’t think i could do anything physical. But with Terri, you show up and you get started. No time for doubting, no time for worrying and wondering if you can really work it. No time for conversation about ‘is this possible’. You just show up and get working. And suddenly- you are doing something you thought for the last 15 years of your life you could never do. I love that. Terri isn’t militaristic. She doesnt get loud and bossy in a bootcamp kind of way. She just gets you moving. No fuss. Oh, but dont get me wrong- it is NOT easy, and it is NOT fun (as Terri likes to say- she never promised it would be!).

Some of my most favorite lessons so far are this (while mundane, they are quite eye-opening!):

1- Salad dressing never made anyone fat.

2- The right amount of protein with your meals will CHANGE your life- even in just 4 days!!! As soon as i added the proper amount of protein to my meals, i felt more energized and less hungry throughout the day! Genius! And here i thought that eating healthy was to overload on veggies.

Finally- i’ve learned so far that getting your body in shape is going to hurt. There are times when the pain in my muscles is so immense that  i can’t even move. Times when you wonder what the heck you are doing, because you felt so much better before you started exercising! But, apparently that pain means it’s working…it’s RESULTS!

And that is what keeps me going…even if the little devil on my shoulder keeps trying to tell me otherwise!
