Don't make a resolution. Make DECISION.

Ha. Yes, I said it. Resolutions SUCK. As much as everyone in the fitness business is alllll over this right now, I must confess that I think making a resolution to lose weight is almost a guaranteed way to not lose weight. I’m probably going to get a flood of hate mail but, meh…whatevs. There are tons of reasons why you shouldn’t make a New Years resolution to lose weight, but I’ll just start with ONE good reason to not make a New Years Resolution.

Resolutions are, by their very nature, short term. Think about it. No REALLY. No one expects anyone to actually ACCOMPLISH a resolution. The fact that you’re even making a resolution is proof of the transient and temporary nature of  the goal you’re ‘resoluting’ about. Meaning it’s more like ‘C’mon, I’d like to do this, but since everyone is making proclamations right now, I’ll have company when I blow it!’ Sure, everyone makes resolutions…what’s the harm in that? Whats the harm in the attempt?

I’m a meanie, I know. Why don’t I believe in the ‘attempt’? At least they’re TRYING, you say. Well there it is. TRYING is bogus BS too. Trying is the big O.U.T.  ‘Trying’ is a word I hate. There really is no such thing as trying. There is doing, or not doing. You dont have to be successful all at once to be ‘doing’. You may have to ‘do’ many times over….but ‘doing’ gets you somewhere. ‘Trying’, does not. ‘Trying’ gives you an easily accessible, and non-accountable excuse for not getting what you want. You can’t fault someone for trying, can you?

Yes, yes you can. Being accountable for your word is a big thing. Being accountable for your word to YOURSELF is an even bigger thing.  Words spoken out loud and your internal true intentions have to match to bring a goal to fruition. My clients are successful because I’ve banished ‘trying’. They are always ‘doing’. You don’t have to be an expert to be doing. You just have to ….DO….in order to DO. And DOING, consistent boring doing, is what works. Which means weight loss requires not, a ‘resolution’, it requires a DECISION.

Making a DECISION will get you the weight loss you want.  A resolution is negotiable. Internally, in the psyche, and externally out in the world. Decisions carry the weight of truth in the psyche. Make a DECISION in 2009 that things aren’t going to change. Make a decison that things are changing NOW. This minute. The second a real, true, decision is made…it’s simply a matter of time and doing before it’s DONE.

:) Decisions ROCK. Resolutions SUCK.
