For once I’ve read the front page of The Huffington Post without wanting to stab myself in the eyes. It said, “Obama to America: GROW UP.” Hiphip HOORAY. President Obama nailed the inauguration speech to the wall and said CHANGE BEGINS WITH YOU.

While everyone was waiting for their dose of soaring hopeful preacher-esque hopety-hope our new President gave us a wake up call, that I hope we’re finally starting to hear. He got down to the business of calling EVERYONE OUT. He was clear about a new era of personal responsibility and community service. He was gracious to the former administration and deftly, clear on the necessity of a clean break, not just from ‘them’, but of the mindset that allowed ‘them’ to happen. OUR COLLECTIVE MINDSET THAT ALLOWED US TO DRIVE THE BUS INTO THE DITCH. He indirectly and very directly told us that it’s time to give up ‘childish things’. Our new President didn’t just mean ‘them’. He meant US. ALL of US.

This has been looming large in my mind for quite some time. IMPULSE RESTRAINT. Everything around us is screaming for us to exercise (ha, pun intended) some impulse restraint. Has anyone else made a connection between our countrys financial collapse and the not-so-strangely coincidental statistic that there are now more obese people than there are overweight people in America? What more has to happen before we wake up and understand that MORE STUFF is not better? MORE food is not better? MORE…. simply, is not better. We’ve spent and eaten ourselves into a massive financial and massive healthcare meltdown. We’re fat, AND broke. Nice going USA! Splat.

Call me crazy, but I see this season of one catastrophe after another a clear clear message from whatever large outside force exists (God Universe, Whatever) that are trying to ell us WE MUST CHANGE. We’re at the point where we don’t have any other choice, really. There are conscious, clear messages coming from the universe that our massive, unrestrained childish impulse for overindulgence MUST change. Old ways of thinking and moving and interacting with each other and our planet are bouncing back and exploding into our faces. Our new President is asking us all to pay attention. Stop the finger-pointing. Stop the greed. Stop the endless, mindless acquisition of STUFF, and take care of ourselves, and each other…. better, first.

Let’s understand that personal responsibility, means taking care ourselves. One of the best ways to help one’s community is to keep oneself healthy, vibrant and active! It’s a community health hazard to allow obesity to destroy our population. Personal responsibility in our ‘new era’ can be as simple as becoming more moderate in all our choices. Impulse restraint. It’s NOT hard. Really, it isn’t.

We can all participate in this new era….we can all inspire the world… simply…. by REALLY taking care of ourselves. Getting and staying physically active, getting the physical ‘house’ in order carries over to other areas of our lives and communities. Being moderate in our choices, means we then have the luxury of ramping UP, or scaling back as necessary. We have the resources for fresh healthy food. Simply choosing it over fast-food is a huge step in the right direction. Eating fresh food will make you FEEL BETTER. When you feel better, you can think better. Thinking better means we’re more apt to make better choices. See where I’m going with this? Garbage in=Garbage out.

Small daily decisions can add up to monumental change that, when magnified by the breadth of this nation will truly become the change we feel our country needs. We must be adult enough to save ourselves FROM ourselves….We ARE the ones we’ve been waiting for. It’s time to grow up America, and act like it.
